Prevention Plan

River’s Edge School Prevention Plan

(Updated March 2024)

At River’s Edge School, our mission is to provide a safe and positive learning environment that supports students’ success in the least restrictive setting possible.

We will accomplish this mission by:

  1. Delivering data-driven behavior programs with consistency to facilitate positive behavioral skills across settings,
  2. Engaging students in high-quality individualized academic instruction that promotes measurable growth,
  3. Collaborating with school, home, and community resources to foster self-advocacy and social/emotional wellbeing.

Prevention Plan Overview

River’s Edge School is a self-contained special education school which serves students who need intense social/emotional/behavioral support. Students who reside within the boundaries of the Jordan School District come to our school via the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) process. River’s Edge School is the most restrictive special education placement in Jordan School District.

Individualized educational programming is provided for elementary, middle, and high school students who have experienced challenges in a more traditional setting.  Program components include: academics, vocational training, social skills, life skills, and community access skills. The main goal of our school is to assist students in learning new behaviors and alternate ways to deal with their emotions enabling them to become successful in their educational and personal lives.

Our school prioritizes prevention by offering support and services to our students and their families. Some of our everyday efforts, systems, and strategies for supporting our students are listed below:

  • Move This World: Teachers implement this social/emotional program daily with students.
  • Teacher Advisories: Students are assigned to a teacher advisory (TA) so students have access to a consistent adult. Students check in and out each day with their TA teacher and build relationships with a small group of students who are in the same TA.
  • MANDT training: All staff members are trained in Mandt, which is an evidence-based approach for preventing escalation and safely dealing with crisis behavior if needed.
  • School-wide level system: Our staff implement a school-wide point system to reinforce desired behavior and provide feedback on skills students are still developing. Students earn

Additional tools and resources we utilize at River’s Edge include:

  • Google Data Dashboard to analyze student data to identify students in need of additional support.
  • Access to District mental health and support resources through Student Services which includes the Jordan Family Education Center and Mental Health Access Program.
  • Academic support with District departments to support the success of every student.
  • Mental health providers (school counselor and school psychologist) are trained and supported by District administration to follow current best practices in prevention and intervention efforts.
  • Access to District specialists who oversee anonymous reporting and content monitoring to identify students who may be at risk.
  • Access to the Jordan Family Education Center,  which offers parent seminars and classes.

Suicide Prevention Plan

  • Our school’s mental health providers and administrators are trained on and review District suicide risk intervention guidelines annually with support from Jordan District’s Student Services Team.
  • Administration and select staff have been trained in Mental Health First Aid, which is a skills-based training that teaches participants about mental health and substance abuse issues. This training helps adults assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance abuse challenge or crisis.
  • All of our school’s licensed staff participate in suicide prevention training for their license renewal.
  • Students identified who may be at risk of suicide receive interventions and support appropriate to their individual needs which may include a screening interview (CSSR-S), parent/guardian contact, a safety plan, mental health recommendations/referrals (JFEC, MHAP, etc.), a re-entry meeting, and regular follow-up.
  • We implement a school-wide social-emotional program called Move This World. This program focuses on self-awareness skills, building relationships, developing effective communication, and accessing safety and support.

Bullying, Harassment, and Discrimination Prevention Plan

  • Our school team proactively reviews relevant data on school climate, safety, and bullying by identifying vulnerable students (e.g., racial and ethnic groups, LGBTQ youth, students with disabilities) and specific spaces where bullying may be likely to plan supports accordingly.
  • Staff are trained on school procedures for recognizing, reporting (SafeUT, content monitoring, etc.), and responding to bullying incidents.
  • Our school staff documents incidents in Skyward according to State requirements.
  • Students involved in incidents of bullying as targets, aggressors, or witnesses receive support for their individual needs which may include suicide risk assessments, counseling and mental health services (e.g.,. school mental health team, JFEC, MHAP), Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), a student wellness plan and/or parent/guardian contact—recognizing that targets, aggressors, and witnesses of bullying are more susceptible to school problems.
  • Teacher Advisories implement Move This World daily as part of the morning check in, which builds a sense of community, helps students identify emotions and use coping strategies, and resolve conflicts peacefully.

Violence Prevention Plan

  • Administrators are trained on the Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines (C-STAG).
  • Our school has a process for timely response to school threats using Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines (C-STAG) and its decision tree. This includes warning potential victims and their parents/guardians.
  • Staff and students are aware of school procedures for recognizing and reporting (SafeUT, content monitoring etc.) threats of violence.
  • Students who are affected by or who make threats of violence receive interventions and support appropriate to their individual needs which may include problem solving, C-STAG interviews, suicide risk assessments, Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), Restorative Conferencing, Mediation, a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), counseling and mental health services (i.e. school mental health team, JFEC, MHAP) a student wellness plan and/or parent contact.
  • We collaborate with a neighboring Jordan District school to bring in peer leaders to interact with our students and model appropriate social/emotional/behavioral skills.

This prevention plan has been created following Jordan District guidelines, which can be reviewed at wellness.jordandistrict.org.
